We may choose to provide NHS services outside the usual times at our discretion. The new contract asks us to provide a fixed amount of NHS care each year. This means that we have to allocate our time and our NHS budget accordingly.

NHS dental treatment includes all treatment necessary to secure and maintain your oral health. In some instances treatment is not available or allowable under the NHS e.g. minor orthodontic treatment, and private options may be available. Posters in the practice have information about the cost of NHS treatment. Your dentist will advise you of the cost of any private treatment.

Making an Appointment

If you ask us for an appointment, we will try to offer you one as soon as possible at a convenient time. Appointments may be made in person or by telephone (0121 476 6218) or (0121 475 6492). Messages may be left on our answer phone. Because a large proportion of our work is of a specialist nature, it will not often be possible to choose to see another dentist other than your regular one, but where it is possible we shall do our best, but this depends on appointments being available.

Please arrive a few minutes early for the appointment as there will be some paperwork to complete. The time we book for your appointment is exclusively for you in the surgery, if you only arrive at the appointment time, some of this is lost - we will not keep the next patient waiting as a result.

All the treatment necessary, in the opinion of your dentist to achieve and maintain good oral health is available on the NHS. This means that the NHS provides any treatment that you need to keep your mouth, teeth and gums healthy and free of pain. It does not include treatments such as teeth whitening or cosmetic veneers, which you might want to make your teeth more attractive but may not be clinically necessary.
Yes, treatment can be mixed in the same treatment plan (some private items, some NHS), however, you cannot "upgrade" individual items of NHS treatment by paying the difference between NHS and Private charges, it has to be one or the other.
We offer emergency treatment to patients we consider our own. If you are a regular patient and keep appointments we will always offer you prompt emergency treatment. We do ask that you phone the practice as early as possible, ideally before 10 am for appointments the same day.
NICE (The National Institute of Clinical Excellence) recommends check ups at intervals of between 3 months and 2 years. We consider that for most patients 6 months, 9 months or 12 months is the most appropriate. For patients with gum disease then 3 months is ideal for prevention. Younger children should ideally be seen 6 monthly to monitor development.
Orthodontic treatment is only available free of charge on the NHS for young people under 18 years of age and who have a clear clinical need for treatment.
A rating system, known as the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN), is used to assess the need and eligibility of individual cases. The IOTN is made up of five grades, which are listed below.
  • grade 1: almost perfect teeth
  • grade 2: minor irregularities with the teeth, such as slightly protruding upper front teeth
  • grade 3: greater irregularities with the teeth do not require treatment for health reasons, for example, upper front teeth that protrude 4mm (0.15 inches) or less
  • grade 4: a severe degree of irregularity with the teeth that requires treatment for health reasons, for example, upper front teeth that protrude more than 6mm (0.25 inches)
  • grade 5: severe dental health problems, for example, upper front teeth that protrude more than 9mm (0.35 inches)
NHS treatment is available for grade 4 or 5 cases. Grade 3 cases are usually judged on a case-by-case basis, and treatment may be made available if the appearance of the teeth is particularly unattractive.

Reminders and Recalls

At the end of your course of treatment, your dentist will discuss with you when you will need to be seen again. NHS dentists now follow guidelines issued by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). This means you will attend as often as is needed to keep your teeth and gums healthy and may no longer need a check every six months. We will then make you an appointment for the appropriate recall period, this enables you to get the time and day that you require well in advance.

The practice routinely sends SMS messages or telephones patients to remind them of check up appointments, or failing that a postal reminder is usually sent. Please remember that this is only a reminder, your appointment is made when you last attend. Please amend any changes of address or telephone number (particularly mobile numbers) when these arise.


If you are unable to keep your appointment please let us know as soon as possible so that we can give the appointment to someone else. Missed appointments waste NHS time and add to the costs of keeping our practice open as an NHS practice. Missed appointments have increased dramatically under the new contract and we may have to reconsider our participation in the scheme. If you miss more than 3 appointments and give less than 24 hours notice, we may not be able to complete your treatment or offer you NHS care in the future.

Emergency Provisions

During normal working hours, for urgent treatment, patients should contact the practice to find out when they can be seen. Genuine emergency situations will be handled within 24 hours. In most cases the wait will be much less. Usually, we shall ask you to come and sit and wait as many booked procedures take less time than allocated and also some patients do not attend allowing time for you to be seen. There are also times which we have set aside for this purpose. Urgent treatment is treatment the dentist considers necessary to relieve severe pain or prevent your oral condition deteriorating before you can make a normal appointment.

Out of Hours Provision

After 6.00 pm and at weekends and Bank Holidays, responsibility for emergency care lies with the NHS Commissioning Board. You will need to telephone NHS 111 to access this provision.
